August Kigo Challenge

Kigo, or seasonal words, are a literary element commonly used in haiku, that allow the poet to instantly transport their reader to a time and place.

For August we challenged our poets to use the following kigo in their pieces: trail, shade, and rust. Below are the best submissions of both haiku and “One Breath” poetry.

first rust spot

my trusty car

speeding downhill

Ruth Holzer - Potomac Falls, VA

a moonlit sky

the overturned barrel

of rust-down leaves

Joanna Ashwell - UK

elephant trail . . .

the  sweetness of jackfruit

going uphill

Vaishnavi Ramaswamy - Chennai, India

shoulder to shoulder

no one complains

under the shade

Tuyet Van Do

rust-covered wheelbarrow

no-one remembers

the white chickens

Tracy Davidson - Stratford-upon-Avon, UK
